M.A.K.S, Incorporated provides contract electronics manufacturing services (EMS), including electronic engineering and PCB design and assembly to customers in a variety of industries. For this project, we partnered with a manufacturer of commercial access control devices. The project consisted of the design and development of an insertion card reader. The card reader is integrated into a door lock system for the hotel and hospitality industry. It is designed to read smart, memory, and magstripe keycards, and is used to provide hotel guests with secured access to guest rooms and facilities as well as monitor staff access via keycard audits.

PCB assemblies were arrayed in four piece panels and scored for detachment into two boards. When laying out a PCB, we optimize the manufacturing process to ensure our customers receive premium quality PCB assemblies at the lowest possible prices. Boards were assembled using SMT assembly with selective soldering for thru hole components. In addition to manufacturing and assembly, we also designed and programmed the embedded software for this high security application. Electronic components were protected with conformal coating to ensure reliable performance through harsh outdoor environments. The electronics were assembled into a custom designed tamper-proof housing. The finished housing is 2.49" x 2.45" x 1.8" and designed to be integrated into the physical door lock mechanism.

Card readers feature a three year battery life with a low battery indicator to ensure continued performance and customer convenience. Prior to shipment, the card readers were tested on-site for functionality and packed into static resistant and shock-resistant shipping containers.
