Engineering, Circuit Board Design and Assembly of a Vehicle Diagnostics Laptop for the Automotive Industry

A leading provider of automotive engineering products and services contacted us about reviewing and possibly re-designing the electronic content of a laptop used to perform comprehensive vehicle diagnostics. The laptop connects to a vehicle's on-board computer, and is required to communicate through a large number of automotive communication protocols including CAN, FlexRay, and J1939.
After the initial review we were able to re-design the product to add new features, improve functionality and decrease production costs. The component count was reduced through more efficient circuit design and consolidation of similar discrete components, and cross-specification was used to source more cost-effective parts without sacrificing component quality. Manufacturing costs were further reduced and production yields were increased by improving the PCB layout. These changes resulted in a significant savings of about 20% of the production cost. PCBs incorporating BGA devices were produced using SMT assembly, and all components were tested for functionality to ensure proper performance of the finished product.
