Engineering, Circuit Board Design & Assembly of Hands Free Faucet Controller & Sensors for the Plumbing Industry

M.A.K.S, Incorporated provides custom electronics engineering, design, and manufacturing services to customers seeking to integrate the latest technology into their products. This project was completed for our customer in the plumbing industry. This large manufacturer of commercial lavatory faucets contacted us about developing a hands free faucet controller and sensor system to be used in consumer and commercial lavatories. The sensors had to stand up to heavy use in a harsh, corrosive environment and use as little power as possible. With these parameters defined, our engineers and designers went to work on developing the PCB layout, hardware design, and embedded software. In total, we developed and manufactured a basic controller, advanced controller, and sensor module adapter.
For this project, we sourced and kitted components, used SMT assembly with selective soldering for mounting of thru hole components, modified wire harnesses to fit the product, and programmed the components. Silicone potting was used on the finished circuit boards to increase their resistance to wear and corrosion. Assemblies were specially designed to operate in the low micro-amperage range, consuming very little power. Basic controllers were assembled using a 2 x 8 array with the final PCB measuring 2.3" x 1.3" and enclosed in a 2.5" x 1.5" x .5" plastic housing. The advanced controls were assembled using a 2 x 5 array and were slightly larger at 3" x 1.3". The advanced controllers were enclosed in a 3.2" x 1.5" x .5" housing. The sensor module adapter was assembled with a 4 x 6 array and fit into a 2" x 1" x 1" plastic enclosure. The pieces were kitted and packed in static resistant and shock resistant packaging for shipment to our customer in Canada.
